The OPC Days virtual event last month included two sessions that highlight key points for the evolution of Smart Manufacturing Profiles:

Information Modeling and Data Source Mapping

These sessions addressed the standard’s CESMII has chosen for SM Profiles, leveraging Information Modeling for Part 1 of the SM Profile specification, and in a Joint Working Group with the W3C and the OPC Foundation, defining a Part 2 companion specification for Data Mapping based on the W3C “Web of Things” Standard.

Did you know that there are manufacturing careers in high-end fashion, sustainable agriculture, and artificial intelligence? Did you know there will be manufacturing careers in 5-10 years that don’t yet exist today? There are clear connections between many nontechnical interests and STEAM opportunities that can help encourage students to expand their horizons and consider advanced manufacturing careers. Manufacturing USA can help educators understand how to make the connections between students’ interests and those careers, and how students can access opportunities in and pathways to advanced manufacturing careers.

Digital Transformation for Accessible, Sustainable and Scalable Smart Manufacturing Education

Thursday, July 27, 2023

Speakers:

Sam Samanta, FLCC

Daniel Poehlein, FLCC

Paul Perkins, Amatrol

Kent Powell, Amatrol

Conrad Leiva, CESMII

Collaborations with regional high-tech ecosystems are critical for addressing current and emerging needs of a technical workforce needed for the digital transformation of industry. We discuss educational resources provided through CESMII.org (The Smart Manufacturing Institute) including hands-on learning activities and micro-credentials for Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing co-developed with Amatrol and SACA. We present case studies of required student co-ops at high-tech businesses leading to full-time jobs and a 75% completion rate in two years.

Digital Transformation for Accessible, Sustainable and Scalable Smart Manufacturing Education

Conrad Leiva recently participated in a workshop on Controlled Environment Agriculture, and I believe we can learn from an exchange of lessons learned between Smart Farm and Smart Factory initiatives. Both initiatives have been making good technology implementation advances with industry leaders and large companies. However, on both initiatives, we need to do better with small-medium size companies which make up 90% of the businesses in both agriculture and manufacturing.

At the Smart Manufacturing business session, hosted at the BEMA Convention, John Dyck, CEO of CESMII, shared CESMII’s mission is to enhance U.S. manufacturing productivity. Through a collaborative ecosystem of partners, an interoperable technology standard and continuous improvement in workforce development and education barriers can be broken down.

Special thanks to Audrey St. Onge, President & CEO N.A. Baking Business at Lallemand, for inviting John and CESMII to this event. Audrey sits on the CESMII | SME

Tyson Foods Saves $60k Annually by Visualizing Smart Manufacturing Data

Improve operational efficiencies and reduce waste by implementing sensors and software to monitor material and machines throughout the manufacturing process. The algorithms will be implemented via the CESMII Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform (SMIP). Access to real-time production data will enable process control decisions in the context of material flows and manufacturing operations.

$60k/yr

Potential to save $60,000 per year on energy costs at Tyson’s Texarkana plant by implementing SM tools.

$1B/yr

Potential to generate an additional billion dollars in revenue annually if SM tools are implemented across Tyson’s global food processing operations.

1%

Smart manufacturing controls netted a 1% yield increase at the Tyson Texarkana plant.

The Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GA MEP) is a program within Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute and is a member of the National MEP network supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). With offices in ten regions across the state, GA MEP has served Georgia manufacturers since 1960. Through coaching and training, they offer solutions-based approaches designed to increase top-line growth and reduce bottom-line cost. GA MEP works with more than 800 manufacturers each year to implement on-site projects, conduct training, and connect manufacturers to Georgia Tech resources and partners throughout the state.
