As the United States embarks on a path towards net-zero carbon emissions, understanding how to decarbonize the industrial sector will be critical. The 2021 National Academies’ report Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System outlines critical near-term policies needed for the decarbonization effort. Among many other things, this report recommends that Congress provide manufacturing incentives to firms through various policy tools and create a new Assistant Secretary for Carbon Smart Manufacturing and Industry within the Department of Energy. 

As part of information gathering for the study’s second report, the National Academies’ Committee on Accelerating Decarbonization in the United States: Technology, Policy, and Societal Dimensions will host a panel discussion with representatives from DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office and several USA Manufacturing Institutes to explore their roles in accelerating energy and GHG emissions reductions in the industrial sector. The event aims to provide information to the committee on opportunities, paths, and near-term actions for industrial decarbonization.
