Data Sharing, AI-Ready Data and Data-First Smart Manufacturing: an Industry Coalition Experience – NIST/NSF Workshop Study
This NIST/NSF Workshop Study, titled “Data Sharing, AI-Ready Data and Data-First Smart Manufacturing: An Industry Coalition Experience,” was authored by Jim Davis (UCLA/CESMII) and covers three industry-academic-government studies conducted between 2020 and 2025. The report addresses AI-ready data, data de-siloing, SM Profiles, and cross-factory ML application scaling, with a focus on a semiconductor industry benchmark study championed by Seagate Technology. Contributing organizations include CESMII, UCLA, NIST, NSF, the National Academies of Sciences, and the Department of Energy. An executive summary has been published in the Manufacturing Leadership Council Journal. This report is directly relevant to CESMII members and smart manufacturing practitioners working at the intersection of data strategy, AI enablement, and operational interoperability.
Beyond Decoupling: How CESMII’s i3X Solves the Context Engineering Gap for Industrial Data Fabrics
In this ARC Advisory Group article, analyst Colin Masson examines how CESMII’s i3X initiative addresses the context engineering gap limiting Industrial AI at scale. By standardizing data models in JSON Schema, enabling MCP server integration, and uniting a growing ecosystem of automation and cloud partners, i3X advances CESMII’s federal mandate to reduce smart manufacturing implementation costs and time by 50%.
