Abstract:

The New Architecture of Manufacturing Innovation: Enterprise-Enabled. Plant-Powered.

For years, manufacturers have tried to scale innovation by centralizing it: corporate selects the technologies, defines the use cases, and pushes standardized solutions into plants. But innovation moves faster when enterprise alignment and plant-level ingenuity reinforce one another.

This requires a radical evolution in the operating model.

Corporate should provide the architecture, interoperability framework, governance, and reusable Smart Information Models that make innovation safe and scalable. Plants – where operational knowledge, urgency, and value creation reside – can own the problems they solve, the use cases they pursue, and the pace at which they innovate.

Interoperability makes this new division of responsibility possible. When data and applications can work together across equipment, systems, vendors, and sites, plants gain the freedom to innovate without creating more technical debt. Local solutions become reusable enterprise capabilities rather than isolated experiments.
