SUMMARY:Smart Manufacturing for All
DESCRIPTION:Listen Now\n \n \n \n \n \n \nAbout this Episode\n\nAugmented reveals the stories behind the new era of industrial operations\, where technology will restore the agility of frontline workers.\nIn episode 17 of the podcast (@AugmentedPod)\, the topic is: Smart Manufacturing for All. Our guest is John Dyck\, CEO at CESMII\, the Smart Manufacturing Institute. \nAfter listening to this episode\, check out CESMII as well as John Dyck’s social profile: \n\nCESMII: (@CESMII_SM) https://www.cesmii.org/\nJohn Dyck: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnsdyck/\n\nIn this conversation\, we talked about democratizing smart manufacturing\, the history and ambition of CESMII (2016-)\, bridging the skills gap in small and medium enterprises which constitute 98% of manufacturing. We discuss how the integration of advanced sensors\, data\, platforms and controls to radically impact manufacturing performance. We then have the hard discussion of why the US is (arguably) a laggard? John shares the 7 characteristics of future-proofing (interoperability\, openness\, sustainability\, security\, etc.). We hear about two coming initiatives: Smart Manufacturing Executive Council & Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform. We then turn to the future outlook over the next decade. \nTrond’s takeaway: US manufacturing is a bit of a conundrum. How can it both be the driver of the international economy and a laggard in terms of productivity and innovation\, all at the same time? Can it all be explained by scale–both scale in multinationals and scale in SMEs? Whatever the case may be\, future proofing manufacturing\, which CESMII is up to\, seems like a great idea. The influx of smart manufacturing technologies will\, over time\, transform industry as a whole\, but it will not happen automatically. \nThanks for listening. SUMMARY:Momenta: Podcast #185 CESMII - The Smart Manufacturing Institute
DESCRIPTION:Listen Now\n \n \n \n \n \n Ken Forster speaks with John Dyck\, CEO of the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute or CESMII\, a public-private partnership committed to transforming the US manufacturing market and increasing global competitiveness through the application of smart manufacturing technologies and workforce development both in manufacturing operations and in the supply chain. \nDiscussion Points: \n\nWhat would you consider to be your ‘Digital Thread’?\nHow do you define smart manufacturing?\nWhat is the role of CESMII?\nDuring a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum\, Rockwell Automation CEO Blake Moret used the term “Shoring” to refer to resilience as a key global trend. To what extent do you see the same pattern?\nWe often hear about the labor shortage is a key challenge in ‘shoring’ decisions. What other considerations are driving such decisions?\nHow much are you seeing ESG factors\, like those advocated in the EU Industry 5.0 initiative\, driving a change in manufacturing operations?\nYou’ve been at the intersection of IT and OT for more than a decade\, what are some of the key trends and technologies you are following that support smart manufacturing?\nThe traditional OT vendors are now facing a new set of IT entrants: the so-called ‘hyper-scalers’: AWS\, Google\, and Microsoft. Do you see a power shift coming?\nAlong the same lines\, every industry has its digital disruptors – such as Tesla for automobiles or SpaceX for space travel. So\, what happens when Elon Musk focuses on industrial automation?\nIn closing\, what are you reading or watching these days?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Participant\n \n \n \n \n \n John Dyck\, CEO\, CESMII
