Smart Industry 2018

Closing Luncheon: The Democratization of Smart, Sustainable Manufacturing

In June 2016, the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC), a national nonprofit focused on transforming U.S. manufacturing by democratizing access to real-time data, was selected to lead the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), a White House-led “Manufacturing USA” initiative. The organization already counts over 90 leading industrial companies and universities as members who have come together to “enable Smart Manufacturing to become the driving, sustainable engine that delivers real-time business improvements in U.S. manufacturing,”  according to CESMII’s mission statement. The organization sees business practice innovation, enabling technologies and workforce development as key strategies toward that end, says CESMII CTO Dr. Haresh Malkani. Also on organization’s roadmap is development of an open platform and marketplace designed to bring scale and cost-effectiveness to the implementation of real-time data analytics and other industrial applications. “Our focus is on the acquisition, contextualization and visualization of data, then using that data to create predictive process models that can provide actionable insights to significantly improve manufacturing efficiencies,” Malkani says. “We aim to move beyond one-off solutions and provide a low-cost platform that even small and medium-sized manufacturers can afford.”
