National Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center Operations Manager
Primary Role: Under the direction of the Director of SMIC Network, of the Smart Manufacturing Institute (CESMII), the SMIC Operations Manager manages the overall operations and business processes of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers (SMIC) within CESMII’s national network. CESMII’s national SMIC network creates highly visible, credible, high value, regional ‘Lighthouse’ extensions of CESMII. The SMIC’s allow CESMII to have a National Reach, while maintaining Regional attention to membership growth, satisfaction and retention. CESMII is the United States’ national institute on Smart Manufacturing (“SM”), ensuring the power of change and innovation is at the fingertips of everyone who touches manufacturing. Headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, CESMII brings over $140 million in committed public private investment through a consortium of partners from across industry, academia and non-profit entities. CESMII is the 5th Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the 9th out of 16 in the national Manufacturing USA network of institutes, each with a specialized focus to improve manufacturing competitiveness in the US. CESMII’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of Smart Manufacturing through sensing, control, modeling, analytics and platform technologies. CESMII’s program and administrative is with the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and with HQ office in Los Angeles, CA.
The national SMIC network is a strategic and synergistic collection of strategic center-of-excellence partners, wherein each is an independent organization that has great industry engagement (academia, industry, government, others). Each SMIC operates as a subrecipient to CESMII/UCLA in support of achieving the objectives and requirements of the DOE Cooperative Agreement. Each SMIC has subrecipient funding and scope of work aligned to its strengths and capabilities that help CESMII build:
- Great connections with local Industry
- SM Platform & Applications that have industry-relevant content/demos
- Better relationships with local members
- A robust distribution network for demonstrating SM technologies and delivering segmented Education & Workforce Development (EWD) training.
The candidate will serve as a key point of contact for CESMII members that have a dependency on the platform, providing guidance on architecture and implementation, developing tools, code samples and documentation to accelerate projects teams, advising on best practices for connectivity, information modeling, data access, and orchestration of multiple components. They will also work as a DevOps resource for CESMII and its members, maintaining Cloud infrastructure and components, including building out capabilities for technical communication, tracking issues, gathering feedback or requirements, and sharing of open-source components or reference patterns. The candidate will also assist in driving alignment between the platform and the CESMII technology roadmap by helping identify platform capability development focus areas and assisting in creating project portfolios to address technology gaps. The candidate will also assist in the assessment of innovative emerging technologies related to Smart Manufacturing to guide CESMII’s current and future efforts.
